Mumbai, Jan 13: The Kannada department of Mumbai University held lectures on the art of translation for Kannada department students at Vidyanagari, Kalina campus, Santacruz east on Friday afternoon January 12.

Veteran litterateur and scholar, Dr Janardhan Bhat said that translations should be touching to the mind of its reader. “The person who sticks to basic concept alone can be a successful translator.”

“There is huge demand for translation in journalism. The one who translates from one language to the other should have control of both the languages. He should leave anti social matters and translate only that which is pro society. He should not translate things that are against life. Translation means to know and to make known. Translators should be extremely careful in journalism,” said Srinivasa Jokatte.

Dr G N Upadhya in his keynote address said that translation makes country and language one. “Many translated works have come into Kannada. Several authors have contributed to translated Kannada literature,” he said.

Surekha Sundaresh Devadiga, Rama Udupa, Kumuda Alva, Anitha P Poojary Takode, Surekha Hariprasad Shetty, S Nalina Prasad, Jyothi N Shetty, Udaya B Shetty, Jaya Poojary Kojakolli, Laxmi Poojarthy and Duggappa Kotiyavar were present.

Kannada department assistant lecturer Dr Poornima S Shetty welcomed the gathering and compered the programme. Geetha Manjunath proposed the vote of thanks.
