Mangaluru: Speed breakers to contain accidents is main issue in police phone-in

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru Dec 29: Complaints poured in about the street vendors obstructing the traffic movement at Central Market which led to traffic congestion, during the 68th police phone-in programme, here on Friday, December 29.

Responding to this, Police Commissioner T R Suresh assured," Police department and MCC will form a team to deal with the street vendors and make way for smooth functioning of traffic at central market. The drive will be regularly implemented”.

A caller from Attavar suggested placing a circle near the Railway station junction where roads from Falnir, Attavar and Hampanakatta join. Placing a circle will reduce the traffic congestion and will make the road more safe. Suresh responded saying," We will look into this matter and analyse the area and decide whether to put up a circle or not".

A caller from Derebail demanded a bus to Land Links area where over 2000 people reside. It is difficult for people to commute to the city. There is only one bus to Land Links are so we demand to put additional bus to that route, the caller said. "We will discuss with Road Transport Authority to put additional buses on that route,” responded Suresh.

A caller from Ladyhill requested to install a speed breaker on Ladyhill - Urwa market road as vehicles come at high speed and the area has become accident prone. ”We can place a speed breaker on cross road that connects the main road. Placing a speed breaker on the main road will be difficult. However, the area will be inspected and if we feel a speed breaker is required we will definitely place it,” the police commissioner said.

A caller from Bejai requested to install a speed breaker near Church Road there. He also pointed out that bus No’s 19 and 15 are not issuing tickets to the passengers, even though there is a rule. “Tickets should be issued in every private bus and if anyone is found flouting rules, the citizens should get the matter to the notice of the department,” said Suresh.

A caller from Urwa market complained that customers of Quality Bar are parking vehicles on either side of the road. Many have food in their vehicle itself.

A caller from Pumpwell complained about the traffic jam at Pumpwell. As the old road to Kankanady has been closed, it leads to traffic congestion. He also urged to divert the heavy goods vehicles and restrict them from entering the city. “The work was supposed to finish in two months. The slow work is affecting smooth flow of traffic. We request the concerned authority for the speedy work of old Kankanady road,” the Police Commissioner requested.

A caller from Derebail complained about the auto drivers demanding excessive fare to travel to Derebail. Police commissioner T R Suresh said, ”If auto rickshaws are found charging excessive fare note down the registration of the vehicle and complain. Based upon the complaint, stringent action will be taken against the driver”.
Twelve calls were received during phone-in-programme.

ACP Traffic Manjunath, Traffic Police Sukumaran, Bus owners association secretary Ramachandra were present.

Phone-in-Programme is scheduled every Friday from 10am to 11am. Contact 0824- 2220530 and 0824-2220201.

Speed breakers is not the real solution for traffic issues. None of the speed breakers in Mangalore are designed scientifically. There is certain norm for speed breakers. The modern vehicles have very small ground clearance. Most of these top class cars get the undercarriage damaged in negotiating speed breakers because they have sudden bump. they are supposed to be gradually sloping.
If a two wheeler, especially a scooter rider does not notice the speed breaker, he is bound to meet with an accident.
Does anyone know how much fuel is being wasted in negotiating speed breakers?
Instead of speed breakers, implement the speed limits strictly, provide pedestrian crossings at appropriate places and ensure that the vehicles give first preference to pedestrians and not to vehicles at such zebra crossings.

Just time pass Phone in programme. Out come is Zero. The traffic dept has put speed brokers in such a place where that it is not required , where required not installed. Because to help businesses people to not to cut their speed. If you really want to improve traffic please shift the service bus to pump well and shift the RTO office and Wholesale vegetable market to out skirt. Why this Phone in programme. What you want to do you are not doing. Simply waste of time.

Better to give some attention towards license issuing authority. Check if the person appearing for the driving test is really fit to drive the vehicle. Check if he is able to follow all the road rules etc., Approach any driving school for driving license, they will tell you a fees and 10 days to get the license. I don't think even driving schools in India are capable of teaching driving properly. They will only teach how to get the driver's license.
And , The way RTO taking test and issuing licenses can not be compared with developed countries. So, who is behind the wheel ???? KILLERS

If the issue is about speed breakers, what about pedestrian crossing the zebra crossings across town have all faded. Looks like the zebra's have all vanished. The Municipal corporation will start work just before the monsoon starts. This time of the year when we have a few tourists and NRI's coming to Mangalore and these people who are used to the pedestrian crossing find it difficult to cross the roads. By the way the elderly, children also need the pedestrian crossing in the Hampankatta area. What are the BD and VHP doing why cannot they visit the Police Commissioner T R Suresh's office and request for good zebra crossings and speed breakers wherever needed and not dictate what sort of New Year celebrations anyone have.

Since our roads are widened like Fr.Mullers Hospital to Nandigudda Circle Vehicles move like rockets specially bikes. Though humps are installed in some places, speed breakers to be formed near Retreat house Jeppu and Double Gate Jeppu to prevent accidents as there are cross roads in these places. Also speed breakers are required to be put opposite KMC Hospital Attavar.
Meanwhile the works taken up here and there digging roads etc be completed within the time stipulated and not dragging the works indefinitely which causes inconvenience to public.
