Kundapur, Dec 29: The police who found out that several cows were being illegally transported by a jeep, conducted an operation in which a person named Manjunath Shetty was taken into custody and 12 cows were rescued. The operation happened at Thombattu, Holebagilu in Machchattu near Amasebail in the taluk.
During the operation, three men succeeded in fleeing, it has been reported. The cows found inside the jeep were dumped in the vehicle in a violent manner.
Assistant police sub-inspector of Amasebail police station, Umesh Naik, was on his rounds when he grew suspicious about the movements of a motor bike rider. When he intercepted the bike, the bike rider grew nervous, and when trying to escape by racing the vehicle, hit a tree. He then stopped a jeep that was following the motor bike. The driver of the jeep accelerated his vehicle hurriedly, and the jeep too went out of his control and hit a tree.
Manjunath Shetty was arrested. During his questioning, he claimed that cattle found grazing by the roadside had been picked and loaded into the vehicle for being transported to slaughterhouse.
A case stands registered in Amasebail police station relating to this incident. The police have launched manhunt for three persons who escaped during the operation.
