Kalaburagi, Dec 21: Two newborns have been deprived of mother’s milk for over a week, after the District Government General Hospital in Kalaburagi mixed up the babies by mistake.
On December 14, the hospital performed five caesarian deliveries including that of Nandamma and Tajbee almost simultaneously. Nandamma was handed over a boy and Tajbee was handed over a girl by the nursing staff, while it should have been the other way around. However, a fight broke out when the nursing staff realized their mistake and asked Nandamma to hand over the boy.
Nandamma’s family was rejoicing the birth of a boy and refused to believe that she delivered a baby girl. They refused to accept the baby girl and Nandamma was reluctant to breast feed the baby.
The hospital staff took both the babies and fed them formula milk in the ICU. They conducted a blood test and the results proved that the baby girl was Nandamma’s. Even then the family refused to accept the newborn. Again a blood test was done in a private hospital which proved the same and the police were called to intervene into the matter. The SP had to convince Nandamma to accept and breast feed the baby girl. However, the family is still not satisfied with the results and has demanded a DNA test.
The hospital has been asked to fulfill the family’s demand so that the confusion can end and the babies can go back with their respective families.
