Bengaluru, Dec 18: Though Karnataka Assembly elections will not be an easy fight for the BJP given the strong Congress presence in the state, the election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have given the party some amount of confidence of repeating the performance in Karnataka.
However, sources said that despite the wins in the two states, Karnataka BJP seems shaken after close fight put up by the Congress in Gujarat.
BJP national president Amit Shah in a press conference on Monday December 18 expressed confidence that BJP will form government in Karnataka.
BJP state unit president B S Yeddyurappa expressed confidence that the "massive victory" of the party will also reflect in the elections of the southern state, where Assembly polls are due in April-May next year.
"The election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have shown that people have once again supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his pro-poor policies," he told reporters at the party office here.
People of Himachal Pradesh have overthrown "corrupt" Congress government and have chosen the BJP, the former Chief Minister said.
"Karnataka will also similarly throw out corrupt Congress government in the state in the 2018 elections. Gujarat elections will have a positive impact over Karnataka's elections too," he claimed.
BJP leader and former chief minister Jagadish Shettar said the assembly results of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh depict people's support for Modi's policies.
"The results show that people are not actually against note ban and demonetisation policies and have supported our PM's initiatives," he said.
Meanwhile, state Congress seems undeterred by the BJP’s win. "The results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh will have no impact on our government. We will win the upcoming election and gift the victory to Congress president Rahul Gandhi," said chief minister Siddaramaiah on Monday.
He further added that those local issues will play an important role in Karnataka elections next year.
Denying anti-incumbency against his government, Siddaramaiah said that Congress would have got to know about anti-incumbency in the Nanjangud and Gundlupet by polls which happened in April. The party won by big margins, he said and expressed confidence that Congress will come back to power in 2018.
Siddaramaiah credited Rahul Gandhi for the improved performance of Congress. "I feel, in Gujarat, we have won despite losing. The people have shown their support to Rahul Gandhi's leadership," he said.
