Sullia, Dec 14: Police sub-inspector of Sullia, who conducted an operation to stop the truck that was allegedly carrying illegal sand, was injured when he was obstructed during discharging his duties by the driver of the said tipper truck.
Gagan, a resident of Sampaje, who was driving the truck and Sampath, a resident of Gunadka of Sampaje village, who is the owner of the truck, escaped from the spot. Manjunath, sub-inspector (SI), who was injured in the incident, was treated in the OPD of Sullia taluk hospital.
At around 5 pm on Wednesday, December 13, the three-member team of SI Manjunath, personnel Suchin and driver Hanumanthappa of Sullia police station had gone to Adkaru –Konadka- Padavu of Jalsoor village on definite information. Manjunath stopped a sand-laden tipper by the name 'Muttappan'. When the driver of the vehicle tried to escape, the sub-inspector pulled his collar in a bid to arrest him. The driver pushed the SI and escaped from the spot. In the melee, Manjunath suffered minor injuries to his hand and legs.
The owner of the truck, Sampath, who also made good his escape from the spot, is a known rowdy sheeter who has involved in attempt to murder and other cases and is member of a political party.
Police have confiscated the truck and registered a complaint of illegal sand transportation and obstruction to duty against the two accused.
Public have raised their concern over the unabated transportation of illegal sand in the taluk. Only the police department is conducting the raids and revenue department is not getting involved, said some citizens.
