Bengaluru: No liquor on New Year? PIL filed, HC asks govt to clarify stand

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (EP)

Bengaluru, Dec 13: The divisional bench of Karnataka high court has asked the state government to inform its stand on ban of liquor during New Year celebrations.

A man named N Nagesh has filed a public interest litigation requesting for ban of liquor during celebrations of New Year. He said that sexual harassment incidents, with people under the influence of alcohol, have taken place during the celebrations earlier.

"Bengaluru gets a bad name due to such incidents. Consumption of alcohol causes accidents. Therefore, liquor should be banned on December 31 and January 1," he stated in his petition.

The PIL has excise department officials, top police officials and the state government as respondents. The court has adjourned the hearing to December 15.

Bengaluru had hit headlines nationwide when the 2017 New Year celebrations turned nightmare for women with many being allegedly molested. The city’s most bustling areas, MG Road and Brigade road saw thousands of men mobbing the revellers, and allegedly groping and trash talking the women in the streets. Even though 1,500 police personnel were positioned in the area, unruly men on bikes, cars and on foot, far outnumbered them. The police largely remained a spectator and intervened only intermittently as men went about their hooliganism, it was alleged.

People should be in limits. Let the people drink, party etc but they should not trouble others. Banning something is not the solution. Drinkers can go to any extent to get booze and banning is not the good idea. In a democracy, no government has right to tell what to eat and what to drink.

If govt bans liquor on 31st December and 1st Jan then govt should allow the liquor on 26 Jan , 15th August and 2nd October.

banning something based on past incidents is stupid ...learn from past and try to be better this time with crowd control ...the best thing for police is to ask the hotels and pubs to provide transport to its customers so that the crowd dont spill out to the street after the pub closes trying to find auto or cabs ...i have my quota and i always wake up early to see the sunrise on 1st jan ...party safe people ...have fun and enjoy life ..

You could have used refined language to express your views.
Government can ban liquor sale or late night parties in Hotels and public place but cannot stop those who want to freakout during New Year eve or Night.
Also, it is not only the men booz.
Even ladies take liberty to sip (polite way) and enjoy on the special occasion.

Not only in Bangalore, it should be ban all over in karnataka (Mangalore also). Young generation enjoying new years with liquor. But some manner less bastards are waiting for particular days to give problems to couples and girls to do molestation and sexual harassment. They do robbery also. So I request young generation to celebrate your new year at home with liquor or whatever. Please don't come outside after drinks. Specially girls... Enjoy your new year!!!

I bet, Siddu will not do this. Whether sexual harassment or any crimes... he and his party not bothered. he will be happy to get the crowd what ever joy they want.. it's last year of his term and if he make such a mistake ( banning liquor on New year eve ), he will be scared he will lose his vote bank from this particular youth sector. so, he will not. siddu may instruct girls or ladies not to come out on new year eve... if any such incident happens he may say... it's ok... or question girls why did they come out... That's all we can expect from this Congi Govt. You can only expect such harsh and strict actions ...only by CMs like Yogi and PM like Modi. Irrespective of their vote bank or fear for chair, they can take any harsh steps in such situations... but sidu and team.. come on...

It is a shame that our new year revelers behaved the way they behaved and there was no cost if you see the outcome. There is no guarantee that these guys will not gather yet again for such a pervert show. A flavor of Section 144 should be imposed on the eve of new year wherein gathering on the street with more than 4 people must be banned. Those people who participated in the mass groping and trash talking are not uneducated. They are mostly youngsters going merry far away from the prying eyes of their parents and guardians. Metro could run till early morning to avoid drink and drive. Uber and Ola could also facilitate to prevent people from drink and drive adventures. Running dry days only will impact revenue to the Government which can use its machinery to maintain law and order.

Public mentality should change. Liquor is not the cause for everything. Do you think all rapes/violence in society especially those with political patronage/accidents happen due to only alchohol???

No. Liquor is not the cause for everything. If you maintain limitation with it nothing will happen. Everything will be O.K. There are multifarious reasons for such happenings and in turn we blame on it.

Only the rich can enjoy in 5 star hotels, everything found there absolutely no restrictions.
The decision taken by the Government is stupid. Liquor bottles will be available in plenty in gullies for higher price. So encouraging black marketing.

Absolutely a foolish opinion that too for those auspicious days such as 31st Dec and 1st Jan to ban liquor. It could be worse while one can stock up as much as they want on the the previous day and make a revelry amounting to a mockery of this ban ?
