Kundapur, Dec 12: A newly married woman who could not bear the alleged harassment at her husband’s house here reportedly jumped into a neighbour's well and committed suicide. The incident took place at Manganasalu, Siddapur on Monday December 11.
Gauri Devadiga (21), elder among two daughters of Achuta Devadiga and Kamala Devadiga, residents of Bandwadi Kelakali, Hakladi here, got married to Raghavendra Devadiga, son of Siddapur resident Manganasalu Sadhu Devadiga on May 21 this year.
It is alleged that her husband, mother and brother-in-law started harassing Gauri after marriage. Gauri, who was tired of the alleged ill treatment, used to speak to her parents often about it. She had gone to her mother’s house last week as she could not bear the harassment. Her parents had asked her to go back to her husband's house and promised to visit her next week to discuss the matter with her in-laws. However, Gauri who could not tolerate the harassment any longer jumped into the well and killed herself on December 11.
It is also alleged that Gauri was harassed on Monday afternoon which prompted her to take the extreme step. Her husband Raghavendra informed about it to the police much later. As it was night, police retrieved the body the next day and conducted inquiries in the presence of tahsildar. They later sent the body to KMC hospital, Manipal for postmortem.
Gauri’s husband, sister-in-law and brother-in-law live in the house. Raghavendra was an alcoholic and used to allegedly harass Gauri together with his mother and younger brother since the day of the wedding. Locals say that there was a quarrel on Monday afternoon and expressed suspicions of murder.
Raghavendra, sister-in-law Sadhu Devadiga and brother-in-law Mahendra Devadiga have been taken into custody and a case has been registered against them in Shankarnarayana police station.
Investigations are in progress.
