Mangaluru, Dec 11: Eleven students from Centre for Advanced Learning (CFAL) Mangaluru have been selected in the prestigious Karnataka Regional Mathematics Olympiad (KRMO 2017). Among the 35 students selected from Karnataka, 11 are from Mangaluru (31.43%) and ALL the 11 students are studying at CFAL.

This information was provided by CFAL at a press conference held in the city on Monday December 11, which was attended by principal of CFAL here, Severine Rosario, and coordinator, Vijay Moras.
Mathematical Olympiad is one of the most prestigious examinations conducted by the Government of India and all selected students qualify for INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad) which leads to International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).
First stage of the exam (Pre- RMO also known as PRMO) was held on Aug 20, 2017 at different centres all over India. A total of 623 students from Karnataka were selected for the Second stage exam (Karnataka Regional Mathematics Olympiad – also known as KRMO). KRMO 2017 was held on October 8th, 2017 and 35 students have been now selected from Karnataka for the Third stage exam (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad – also known as INMO).
Out of the 35 selections from the state, 11 are from Mangaluru and all selectees are CFAL students! This is a proud achievement for our region!
2016-17, CFAL student Aditya Prakash, had been selected for the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. After a gap of 20 years, a student from Karnataka was representing India at the International Math Olympiad. It was a big achievement for Karnataka. Along with outstanding faculty, Aditya Prakash mentors and guides students preparing for the Olympiads at CFAL. CFAL is changing the paradigm of learning in the region- students are now excelling in some of the most challenging examinations in the country that require deep conceptual understanding.
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the largest, oldest and more prestigious mathematics Olympiad for students. While many private entities conduct different Olympiads, there is only one Olympiad that is recognised by the government and which is internationally recognised. (Like the Olympics for sports).
The Mathematics Olympiad Program in India is organized by the HomiBhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM) of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
To select the Indian team for International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), 30 students selected from INMO attend a training camp in Mumbai. Out of these a team of 5-6 students will represent India at the International Mathematical Olympiads (IMO) 2018 which will be held in Romania in July 2018.

Until CFAL started promoting National Level Math & Science competitive exams, very few students had cleared or even attempted exams like KRMO, JEE, KVPY etc. from this region. This is because, the current education system is focused on board-exam marks and rote-based learning that diminishes true understanding and love for the subject. This year, 11 students from Mangalore (2 of them from 10th std.)clearing the exam is a historical milestone for this city. If students have strong conceptual understanding and guidance from highly motivated professors, they can achieve outstanding results.
It is important to understand the importance of starting early. Just like sports, athletes who have excelled have started their career early, and have competed at various levels in the State and then at the National junior level and then compete at National Senior level, before playing for the country. In STEM, students who start early and who compete in junior level national level exams, like Olympiads, NTSE, AMTI, find it easier to compete and succeed at competitive exams like JEE, NEET, KVPY, CA, IAS. Understanding the subject and the ability to see things differently happen when children are introduced to the subject matter in a creative manner at an early age.
If a student learns for excellence and not for marks, his/ her journey of learning becomes joyful and competitive exams are not a threat. However, the current education system puts excessive importance on securing marks through rote- learning. Since the inception of CFAL, students in Mangalore have been able to achieve what was previously considered only a dream. CFAL has been consistently working towards changing education paradigms and is striving to empower children to be their best selves.
The next batch for NEET, JEE (main and advanced) will begin on April 9, 2018. Students currently in tenth standard are eligible to register themselves for these courses.
