Mangaluru Dec 9: Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr Veerendra Heggade inaugurated Mangaluru Corporation Day here at Town hall on Friday, December 8.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Veerendra Heggade said,”I heard about Ullal Srinivas Mallya from my father, as he has contributed immensely for the welfare of the people. The development in Dakshina Kannada is because of him and all should follow his footsteps and continue from where he has left. Ullal Srinivas Mallya has spearheaded development works in the district and today we are enjoying its benefits”.
“Town hall was constructed because of him and today’s generation lack knowledge about this great personality. Mayor Kavitha Sanil has taken up the initiative of remembering him and informing the young generation about him. His contributions should always be remembered,” he stressed.
Veerendra Heggade presented the Ullal Srinivas Mallya Memorial Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award to saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath. Ullal Srinivas Mallya Memorial Award was presented to Agari Raghurama Bhagavatha for Yakshagana, K A Rohini for excellence in the field of Education and M R Poovamma for Sports.
The life time achievement award consists of a memento, a citation and a cash prize of Rs 1 lac. The memorial award carries a prize of Rs 50,000, a memento and a citation.
The award selection committee comprised of former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University and also Karnataka State Open University B A Vivek Rai, former Vice-Chancellor Kannur and Calicut universities B A Abdul Rahman, former Chairman of Syndicate Bank K N Thingalaya, social worker Rita Noronha and eminent journalist Manohar Prasad.
Prior to the award ceremony, the City Corporation conducted a drawing competition for primary and high school students within its jurisdiction. The topics were Mangaluru International Airport; New Mangaluru Port; National Institute of Technology, Suratkal; National Highway 66 and Mangaluru-Hassan railway line. The topics were selected on the basis of contribution of late Mallya for their development.
A cultural programme show was also the highlight of the celebrations.
Mayor Kavitha Sanil, Corporator Asha D Silva and Sabita Misquith enthralled the audience with their dance performance. Even other corporators and employees performed dances, songs and mimicry. The Mayor also presented a Karate demonstration.
District in charge Minister Ramanath Rai, MLA JR Lobo, chief whip of Legislative council Ivan D'Souza and others were present.
