Mangaluru, Dec 6: Fishing activity which had come to a standstill on account of cyclonic storm, Ockhi, did not take off even on Tuesday. Fishing boats failed to venture into the sea in ports like the city, Malpe, Gangolli etc although the disturbances at sea have subsided. Strong wind even at deep sea made it impossible to safely navigate the boats and therefore, the fishermen decided to stay ashore as condition of high alert continues and they have been advised to stay away from sea.
Because of the suspension of fishing activity, the quantum of fish reaching the markets has dwindled and automatically prices of fish have gone skyward. Several fish vendors have been forced to suspend business on account of non-availability of fish for sale. Fish varieties like pomfret, mackerel, sear fish etc commanded high prices in the market at Malpe.
Kerala meteorological department expects wind velocity to reach 45 to 50 kms per hour during the next one day and asked fishermen and people living near the seashore to be vigilant. Therefore, fishing activity might take a few days to stabilize.
