Kolkata, Oct 18 (IANS): In a bid to increase passenger services in northeast India, the Northeast Frontier Railway added 56 new coaches in 28 mail express trains in the current financial year, expanding the number of berths by 36 per cent, an official said on Tuesday.
"During April to October, 2017 as many as 56 coaches have been added in 28 mail/express trains. This has led to the generation of 4,078 additional berths. During 2016-17, as many as 26 coaches were added in 17 trains leading to the creation of 3004 additional berths.
"Thus in the first seven months of the current financial year alone there has been an increase of 36 per cent in the volume of additional berths generated in existing services," Pranav Jyoti Sharma, Chief Public Relation Officer of N.F.Railway said.
Multiple extra coaches have been added to the Guwahati-Naharlagun Intercity Express and the Dibrugarh-Howrah Kamrup Express while express trains from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari, Chandigarh and Amritsar got at least one additional coach this year, he said.
Claiming that the N.F. Railway is "going all out for addition of coaches to augment passenger services", Sharma said the figure is expected to grow higher by the end of the current financial year.
