Mangaluru: Injured under-trial prisoner breathes his last

Mangaluru, Jul 17: An under-trial prisoner who was lodged in the district prison here, who was suffering from ill health, failed to respond to treatment and passed away on Sunday July 16.

The youth who lost his life was Udayakumar Rai (25), who was a native of Kasargod but had settled down in the city since sometime. Police personnel of Urwa station had arrested him relating to ganja trafficking allegation. He was in judicial custody. Since sometime, Rai, who was lodged in a cell in old prison, was suffering from depression, it is gathered.

Reportedly on account of his psychological condition, Rai used to pick up fight often with fellow inmates. After his health exhibited sudden changes on Sunday, jail staff had admitted him into Wenlock Hospital here. However, he did not show improvement although he was treated, and breathed his last.

In the past too, Udayakumar was treated for depression. It is said that about ten days back, he was attacked by some other prisoners over some issue. He was seriously injured in this incident. Actual reason for his death will be revealed after the police finish their investigation. A case about the incident stands filed in Barke police station.
