Two more Catholic crosses desecrated in Goa

Panaji, Jul 13 (IANS): Two more Catholic crosses were desecrated in a village in Goa early on Thursday, police said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Rupinder Kumar said the desecration happened in Loutolim village.

The incident followed a series of desecrations of Catholic icons of worship as well as some Hindu symbols in the south Goa district.

The Congress as well as Goa Deputy Speaker and BJP MLA Michael Lobo have demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the serial desecration.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said the multiple desecrations were an attempt to spread communal divisiveness in the state, which has a significant minority population.

    They have caught Francis Pereira, aged around 55, from Curchorem moving in his own taxi, at Macazana at around 3 ‘o clock on Saturday.

    He lives in Kudchade and is a bachelor.

    Pereira has reportedly told the police that he broke the religious shrines to release the souls trapped in the shrines and graves.

    Police told Goa365 that they laid a trap and managed to catch him at Macazana, moving in a car with the tools to break the shrines.

    In the morning, they also conducted a search of his Curchorem house and recovered more evidence.

    He has reportedly admitted that he has been braking the shrines for the last five years.

    According to police, he believes that souls trapped in shrines, graves and statues become devils and help the politicians.

    Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai as well as the high police officials rushed to Curchorem after getting the news.

    Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral has declared a reward of Rs 50,000 to the police team, led by PI Ravi Desai, that nabbed the culprit.

    These are all deliberate attempts to polarise and the people of this country have become wise to understand who is behind these desecrations. The Tide is changing in India and these crude attempts will not reap any electron dividents.
