Kundapur, Jul 13: Unknown thieves who entered Lord Shankarnarayana temple at Belve in the taluk on the night of Tuesday July 11 perhaps felt by the weight of the donation box they could gain access to, that they had bagged a bounty. Their jubilation soon turned into agony upon finding that the box was empty.
The thieves had entered the temple by breaking open the door of the outer precincts. They found a donation box located opposite the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, which was quite heavy. The donation box was found thrown into a drain near the road deviation at Albady. The thieves apparently opened the box with a huge boulder and got nothing from the box.
In view of serial thefts happening in temples like Konjady, Marur, Yalanoor etc on Monday, management of this temple had opened the donation box on Tuesday and accounted for the donations made by devotees. They had placed the empty box back in its original position.
After the temple authorities informed them of the theft, Shankarnarayana police visited the spot, gathered information from the locals, priest, and managing committee of the temple and began investigation. It is learnt that a year back, thieves had struck it rich at the temple on June 11, 2016, by stealing silverware, gold items etc.
