Udupi, Jul 12: President of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations (IFKCA), Prashanth Jathanna, immediate past president, Louis Lobo, and secretary, Dr Neri Carnelio, have expressed the opinion that it would be ideal to christen Light House Hill Road Mangaluru as 'St Aloysius College Road'.
They noted that under pressure from Vijaya Bank Employees Union, an effort to rename Light House Hill Road as Mulki Sundaram Shetty Road was recently made through a government order. This development did not have the support of the people and people's representatives from the region, it noted.
The federation has observed that the late Shetty's gamut of service activities were not limited to coastal districts and he was a leader of entire Karnataka's stature. There is no doubt that Shetty had extended his hand of help to all sections of the society including Christians and Muslims by offering employment and social service, it noted. Aloysius College and other educational institutions are backed by impressive history. The institutions have history of over a hundred years, and are counted among the best institutions in the region. Students from these institutions have brought laurels to coastal belt of Karnataka and the entire state. Students from all over the country and world come here to get educated here. Therefore, it would be apt to rename this road after St Aloysius College, the federation said. This will tantamount to tribute extended to the city, this educational institution, students who studied here and the teaching staff who contributed to the enormous success of the institution. IFKCA has expressed the opinion that it would be apt to name some road in Mulki or other places after the late Shetty so that his fame will get further impetus.
The federation has requested people's representatives from Dakshina Kannada district and people living in the area covered by the said road to make an effort to rechristen the road after St Aloysius College, duly taking city mayor, ministers, city corporators etc into confidence, as currently there is a stay order from the court against renaming of this road.
