Mangaluru, Jul 10: Thieves entered Goddess Mookambika temple at Guthakadu near Kinnigoli on the night of Saturday July 8 and decamped with silver valuables and golden Karimani chain found on the idol of the Goddess. Value of the items stolen has been estimated at Rs 1.75 lac.
Trustee of the temple, Vivekananda, explained that he had locked the temple door at 10 pm on Saturday after the night puja. When he went near the temple at 5 am on Sunday, he found that the door of the Thirtha Mantapa was open. A closer inspection revealed about the fact that the door of the sanctum sanctorum too had been forced open. He then conveyed information to Mulky police. Out of various items stolen, the donation box was found abandoned next to the temple.
Mulky police circle inspector, Anantapadmanabha, sniffer dogs and finger print experts visited the spot. A case was registered in Mulky police station. Anantapadmanabha said that it would be advisable to arrange for guarding the temples by groups of youth in shifts particularly during the rainy season. He also advised the temple management to get CCTV cameras fitted.
