Udupi, Jul 10: District in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj on Sunday, July 9, inaugurated houses on the newly built layout ‘Hosa belaku - Hosa baduku’ near Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Kodankoor. As many as 29 houses have been built for the migrant families of Sudugadu Siddha and Budga Jangama community families, who were earlier residing at Nitturu.
Speaking on occasion, the minister said, “Today is a very happy day for me as migrant workers get their own homes after two decades. Udupi municipality has provided a permanent and hygienic shelter for them. The members of these communities should provide education to their children without any gender discrimination. Education guarantees a good future. The area should be banned from plastic. There should not be any kind of road encroachment. The layout should be kept neat and tidy.”
The minister also instructed deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis to send required officials to the layout to draft BPL and Adhaar card for the residents.
The DC further instructed officials to start Anganwadi for children residing in the layout.
"The migrant families lived in thatched huts in the slum colony close to national highway 66 at Nittur earlier. The district administration issued orders to shift them to other places to maintain hygiene in the area. These migrants have been living with their relatives since 20 to 30 years, but not a single family has a ration card or an ID card," she said.
To relocate them, the district in-charge minister and City Municipal Council (CMC) decided to provide housing facility under Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Limited. The total area of the layout is 55 cents, which was a purchase by a private party. The houses built in two or three cents each have two rooms and attached bathroom-toilet facility.
Roads will be provided to this layout from Social Welfare Department at a cost Rs 50 lac. Lights and water facility have been provided. Street lights, concrete road and drainage system will be provided soon.
The layout is designed by Karthik Shetty Alevoor of Kinfratech and Mohammed Saif of Plush Living.
