Bengaluru: Inter-faith couple denied hotel room, owner says nothing to do with religion

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Jul 5: An inter-faith couple from Kerala alleged that they were denied room by staff of a Bengaluru hotel as they belong to different religions. However, the hotel owner has a different story to tell.

Shafeek Subaida Hakkim in a post shared on social media revealed that he and his wife Divya tried to check into Olive Residency hotel in Sudhamanagar, Bengaluru on Wednesday July 5 morning. The receptionist asked the couple if they were married. When they said yes, he still denied them a room as Hakkim is a Muslim and Divya a Hindu.

Apparently, as Divya had an interview, the couple decided to move to another hotel than waste time arguing.

When a news channel contacted the receptionist, he confirmed that he denied the couple a room as he was ‘suspicious’ of them. "We don’t give rooms to Muslims and Hindus who come together, because what if they go into the room and hang themselves… Why do we need that trouble," he reportedly said.

However, according to the owner of Olive Residency Shivu, the couple being denied a room had nothing to do with the couple’s religions.

"The couple asked for a room for half an hour but the cashier refused. Then the couple agreed to take the room for a day. However, the couple did not possess valid identity cards or luggage and hence were denied a room," Shivu said.

"We did not refuse them a room because of their religious beliefs. Seventy to seventy five percent of our customers are Muslims. Hence there is no Hindu-Muslim issue here. Those who have proper ids are given rooms. This couple did not show us any proper id nor did they have any luggage," he said, according to news agency ANI.

Nevertheless, the hotel is facing the brunt with scores of netizens rating the hotel lowest in online review portals. Many have criticized the hotel for discrimination in the reviews.

If they show their ID cards then it is sufficient. Why insist other details like caste, religion, married status etc.

Looks like Shafeek Subaida Hakkim is trying to make use of present situation to create trouble. Otherwise, why he should share post on social media ? Hotel has done the right thing refusing room to the couple. No hotel will give room for 30 minutes unless you provide them valid marriage proof. Mallu must have thought his post will create uproar and he will gain sympathy from people. Shafeeq Iqa, idh Karnataka. Somali alle.

When I got married and was returning to Kuwait, Bombay immigration officials asked me to show a proof of our marriage. I was not carring marriage certificate(even status in passport was not changed). Mangalsutra could not help and luckily I had photographs (Album) which saved me from undue harrasement and waste of time.

I think unnecessary drama by media as well as the couple. It's simple matter ... which was followed for years by the hotel owners or management. If they find the couple suspicious , they will definitely reject the admission. Nothing wrong in that. Now unnecessary religion is brought in between , either by couple or media. Let's not make a big hungama on this. we have enough stuffs to look at or bother about ... please.

Hotel has done correct thing..... here I don't think religion matters. For hotels there is strict advise from our police department that they have to Identify the customers. When young man and young lady without any language enters the hotel, they asked for identification. What is wrong in it..... If they are husband and wife than they have to carry identification and marriage proof if they want to overnight stay in Hotel.

With out proper ID no lodge gives accomodation especially in the described case. They might have faced problems relating to inter religious couples. But if they provide proper doc things will be easy. Most important admission to any good lodging admission can be refused without assigning reason. Its their discretion.

The argument of the receptionist and the owner seems reasonable. The couple said they did not have Id and the woman was having an interview and when asked to show the interview letter, she did not have, gives enough reason for suspicion.

On the other hand, in Mumbai , we have enough hotels that give room for 1, 2 or more hours, only for couples and they do not check for luggage. Also, the couple need not be married and even married, not necessarily married to each other.

It is a bit questionable.why didnt they have any ID? card.usually when one goes anywhere or travel carry a Id with.both of them didnt have.Afterall hotels have the freedom of recieve or reject a guest. Not compulsory to give. They went elsewhere.is ok.No need of discussion.Afterall woman wasnot alone and not in a emergency situation.

Kerala as it is , is on the international radar with lots of cadres in ISIS and other terrorist activities. The state has also been a safe haven for criminals. So the receptionist does not want to take any risk . Who knows 2 months down the line he mite be pulled up for this blunder when the learn that the guy used a fake name.

..precaution is better than cure..Hotel management has the right to deny service if their requirements are not met..if something happens then authorities first will check hotel documentation..its customers fault if they didnt had ID..Bangalore is a cosmopolitan city, no one cares who is with who..they mean business..
