Kundapur, Jul 5: A man from Avarse gram panchayat limits in the taluk had tried to rape a married woman living alone in his neighbourhood on the night of Sunday July 2. Police personnel of Shankarnarayana station took him into custody on the basis of complaint filed by the woman on Monday.
The lady in question had married a daily wage worker. Within a year of her marriage, she gave birth to a male baby. Within the next two months, her husband had run away.
Chandra Naik (35), living in a house near the lady's residence, reportedly approached her fully drunk on Sunday night. He repeatedly called out to her from outside to open the door. When she refused, he broke open the door, forced himself inside, and tried to rape her. The woman shouted for help, escaped from the rear door, and sought refuge in a neighnouring house. Chandra Naik waited for her all night at her residence and went away only after dawn on Monday. This was witnessed by several people living in the area.
Chandra Naik has wife and two children. He is a habitual drunkard and has a couple of cases filed against him in the police station, it is gathered.
The woman filed complaint of rape attempt in Shankarnarayana station on Monday after which the police took up investigation. The locals found out the whereabouts of the accused on Monday evening and handed him over to the police station.
