Karkala, Jul 3: In a bizarre incident which happened at the government hospital here on Sunday July 2, doctors reportedly advised a family to take away the body of a man brought by them to the hospital for treatment, after declaring that he was no more. The family members however, said that it transpired later that the man was alive at that time.
Gopal Devadiga (47), residing at Fisheries Road here, had been admitted into the hospital three days back as he was suffering from cough, phlegm and fever. After admitting Devadiga as an in-patient, the doctors had begun to treat him. The doctors told the family later that he would be discharged as the patient was favourably responding to treatment.
After sometime however, the doctors reportedly told the family that the man had suffered from acute chest pain all of a sudden, and that in spite of their best efforts, he could not be saved. The family believed the doctors, and as advised, brought the body home and prepared for conducting his funeral. At this juncture, Devadiga suddenly opened his eyes and began to shout, it is said. He was given immediate attention and taken to a local private hospital thereafter, but he died at the hospital, the family members said.
The family members allege that the doctors at the government hospital are responsible for the death of their family member as they had falsely claimed him to have died, even when he was alive. Doctor at the hospital, Malini, said that the man had suffered from sudden chest pain and he was provided treatment at the hospital. She added that Devadiga had died of heart attack even though artificial breathing through ventilator was arranged. The doctors have expressed the opinion that sound emanating from Devadiga's body could have been caused when oxygen that had entered his body was slowly coming out, making the family members believe that he was alive.
