Panaji: ‘GST anxiety same as Y2K syndrome’ - Manohar Parrikar

Panaji , Jul 2 (TOI): CM Manohar Parrikar said here on Friday that the GST was the "simplest taxation policy" so far and undue fear was being created against it. He said with the implementation of GST, Goa will be borderless in terms of trade.

"The whole nation has been put on one platform. From midnight, the tax collected on Goa's border will be abolished. We will become borderless in terms of trade with our neighbouring states. I urge people not to panic. Undue hysteria is being created as it was being done during 1999 with the Y2K hoax," Parrikar said, adding that there will be enough time to understand the process.

Parrikar also said though he was supposed to attend the special parliamentary session, he chose to stay back so that he could personally monitor the transition from indirect taxes to GST. He said the government has created multiple teams of CAs who will be available at sales tax offices to assist people in filing returns.

"Goa will definitely benefit from GST as we are a consumer state. All the purchases, even if made from outside, will contribute to the state's exchequer. I have read the GST draft three or four times and don't feel there's anything that can be questioned," he said.

Speaking at the ASSOCHAM summit on GST, Parrikar assured local traders that they would benefit under the new tax rules.
