Mangaluru Jun 28: A policeman was awarded two years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 20,000 fine after he was convicted in a bribery case.
Mahesh is the policeman. He was convicted and sentenced by the district sessions and special Lokayukta court in city.
Sub-inspector Ramesh Gowda and police constable Mahesh were charged with taking bribe from a person named Umar Farooq at Beltangady police station in 2009. Mahesh had promised Umar that a case against him would be dismissed if the money was paid. Umar had complained to Lokayukta and a trap was laid to catch Mahesh.
Lokayukta Inspector Udaya Naik had arrested Ramesh Gowda and Mahesh for bribery and made them accused in the case.
Ramesh Gowda stands acquitted while Mahesh was convicted by the district sessions and special Lokayukta court here.
Justice Muralidhar Pai held the trial of the case.
Special public prosecutor K S N Rajesh had argued for Lokayukta.
