Mysuru: Consumption of beef at seminar held at govt hall triggers row

Mysuru, Jun 27 (DHNS): The consumption of beef by the organisers of a seminar at Maneyangala hall in Kalamandira here on Sunday has attracted official action as well as condemnation from pro-Hindu organisations.

While the district administration has blacklisted Charvaka Social and Cultural Trust for serving beef to the chief guests at the seminar, Deputy Commissioner D Randeep has slapped a notice on Kannada and Culture department assistant director H Chennappa.

“We have blacklisted the Trust and also confiscated the deposit amount paid by it. The district administration will take necessary measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” Randeep said.

Chennappa said the organisers have violated the rules. “We permitted them only to organise a seminar for three days. The organisers did not inform us about the consumption of beef,” he said.

A seminar on ‘Food Habits and Freedom of Expression’ had been organised from Friday to Sunday by Charvaka Social and Cultural Trust, in association with the Kannada and Culture department and AVSN organisation, at the department-managed Maneyangala hall. On Sunday, the seminar was inaugurated by consuming beef, to protest against the Central government’s recent ban on the sale of cattle for slaughter.

Writer K S Bhagwan, Prof B P Mahesh Chandra Guru, Hindulida Vargagala Jagruti Vedike president K S Shivaram and others consumed beef on the stage. Corporator Purushottam, Praja Trust president Sosale Siddaraju and seer Jnanaprakash Swami of Urilinga Peddi mutt were present.

Defending their action of consuming beef, Bhagawan said a few people had consumed meat at the Vidhana Soudha some time ago, but none questioned it. “The Constitution has not said that consumption of beef is illegal. We have not violated any law. Scores of people are opposing us due to lack of proper knowledge. We are ready to face a legal battle. All meat, such as that of cow, goat, chicken are the same. We had organised the event to eradicate superstitions,” he said.

‘Cleansing ritual’

Meanwhile, members of the BJP and various Hindu organisations performed a cleansing ritual with cow urine on the Kalamandira premises. They demanded immediate arrest of Bhagwan and dismissal of Chennappa. They said Kalamandira has its own sanctity, but the so-called intellectuals have profaned the place by consuming beef. The BJP members suspect the state government’s involvement behind the act.

Mysore-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha said, “Let them (Bhagwan and Mahesh Chandra Guru) consume dog meat at their house. But, they have misused and defamed a government institution by consuming beef there. The state government should register a criminal case against them. Governor Vajubhai Vala should dismiss Mahesh Chandra Guru, who is a professor at the University of Mysore”.

No one objects if anyone has sex with his or her partner in private. But if do it in public it hurts the sentiments of culturally orthodox people. It has to be condemned.
In the samend way majority ofor Indians do not have problems if you eat beef for lunch or dinner. Breakfast too i's not a problem. But when you do it on public stages, it is not acceptable just because you are doing that to hurt someone's sentiments.

Shankar, eating and having sex is two different matter, but i don't know how you relate both or you may having some misunderstanding on two different acts which can be done in public and private. With regards to eating beef, its not unconstitutional whereas urine or any other anumal is waste excreted from the body hence it is not a healthy thing to use for cleaning rather urine should be cleaned with washing with soap detergent. Sab ulta hai yaar, this is called andh bhakthi

This act of so called intellectuals shows purposely hurting the sentiments of majority population, eating beef or pork whatever is personal choice, but it should be consumed on dining table, not on stage and roads. some people do argue of hindus too eating beef, this practice is limited in few states like Kerala & Karnatak, India is such a big country and this cannot be treated as common practice.

This is a protest against government's ban. A protest can be made only in public arena and not in one's dining room.

Why the issue of eating in Govt Hall, when State Govt itself is promoting Beef eating? They should have also served some chilled beer or good old country liquor to be consumed with the hot beef chilly & biriyani

India's largest cow slaughterhouse in Hyderabad, owned by Al-Kabeer is managed by the active partner, who is a Hindu. Majority of the butchers and workers there are also Hindus. There is nothing called mutton pattice in India, it is only beef pattice. In Mumbai bar and restaurants and catering services, they mix beef in mutton preparations, to increase their profit.

People are eating beef for thousands of years and now you guys are controlling it because of BJP is in power. If you don't want to eat beef, don't eat. Who are you to dictate others what to eat. Beef is high in proteins and good for preventing many disease like TB etc. Do you know who sell beef at Subways, Pizza places and many franchise restaurants in the USA. The Bhakts! Have you ever asked them to stop selling or eating?

People are eating pork too for thousands of years. More people eat pork than beef. If you dont want to eat pork at least allow the rest to eat. Why is pork banned in the muslim majority state of Jammu and kashmir? If pork can be banned by you why are you then objecting to beef ban?

Pork is available in many Muslim majority counties even in Pakistan. Banning pork in Jammu and Kashmir is a news for me.

Holy Quran says that Muslims should refrain from eating swine meat. But they don't force others not to eat pork. Can you tell me where it is mentioned in Hindu religious books that eating beef is against their religion and they should force others too not to eat beef?
