Udupi, Jun 26: Prime Ministers' Indian Generic Medicine Centre (Janaushadhi) was opened here at Nanalal Arcade, Badagupete on Sunday, July 25.
Shobha Karandlaje, MP of Udupi–Chikkamagaluru constituency inaugurated the drug store. A formal stage programme was held at Madhwa Mantapa in Sri Krishna Math on the occasion.
Speaking on the occasion Sri Vishweshtheertha Swamiji of Paryaya Pejawar Math said, "This is a good project initiated by prime minister Narendra Modi. The government of India started this facility to make available quality medicines at affordable prices under one roof to poor people. Medicines have become costly these days. Most people depend on allopathy treatment than ayurvedic. People have less faith in ayurveda, because it gives delayed results. Private doctors always recommend branded medicines. There is inter-connection between them doctors and drug stores. So to tackle this problem, the PM took this step."
"Ministers and rich people do not approach government hospitals. There is a high competition between private medicine manufacturing companies to earn profit. Through this new drug store, we will get quality and unadulterated medicines at cheap rate. Only then, the dream of healthy state can be realised," he added.
On the occasion, Pejawar Swamiji urged the government and the public to support the prime minister's noble inititaive.
Sri Vidyasagartheertha Swamiji of Krishnapur Math said, "Earlier people lived healthy. As food habits have changed, most of us fall sick. Medicines have become an essential part of everyone's lives. The medicine sector has been commercialised and thinks only about gaining profit. Government introduces many schemes and programmes, but there should be no delay in its implementation."
Abhishek took the initiative to open the generic store in the city. The government has allotted 1000 generic centers for the nation. This was implemented through National Youth Co-operative Society (NYCS). The centre has received 25 applications from the state, but Udupi got the first priority. More than 600 medicines for diabetes, blood pressure, cancer, gastric, vitamins, antibiotics etc are all available. Doctor prescription letter is a must to avail medicines.
Nalini Pradeep Rao, president, taluk panchayat, Udupi; Ramesh K, representative of NYCS; Shyamprasad Kudwa, councilor; Dr Shivanand Nayak, ABVP medical council chief and others were present.
