Mangaluru, Jun 26: Doctors at Yenepoya Hospital on June 24 achieved yet another notable success when they conducted a successful cadaver kidney transplant and gave new lease of life to a patient.
Dr Nischith D'Souza, urologist and kidney transplant surgeon led the operation on Basil Lobo, aged 45 years, who has been suffering from irreversible kidney failure for 5 years. He received a kidney from a deceased patient from KMC.
Urologists Dr Mujeeb Rehman, Dr Althaf Khan and nephrologist Dr Santosh Pai of Yenepoya Hospital took part in this transplantation. The patient is currently recovering. He and his family are overjoyed with this donation said Dr Nischith.
Basil Lobo, hailing from the small village of Kalathur in Kasargod district, has been suffering from irreversible kidney failure for the past 5 years. He lost his sister to the same disease. He is married and has two children. Basil is a coolie worker with a paltry income, and his wife is not employed. The burden of the disease has taken a toll on him financially, as he was on dialysis thrice every week. Add to that, he had no suitable kidney donor in his family.
The expense of this cadaveric kidney transplant, which has given him a new lease of life, is around Rs 5 lac. Hence Basil Lobo and his family have requested philanthropists and kind-hearted people to donate towards this cause and enable Basil to get back to normal life.
