Mangaluru: Heavy rains cause rivers to swell, houses flooded in Sasthan

Mangaluru, Jun 26: Heavy rains have made the rivers swell in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district on Sunday, Jun 25.

In Dakshina Kannada district, Bantwal taluk received 91.3 mm rainfall followed by Belthangady 75.9 mm, Puttur 68 mm, Mangaluru 50.4 mm and Sullia 36 mm.

Water levels in all the rivers in Dakshina Kannada- Phalguni, Kumaradhara and Nethravati - have gone up.

A man named Avinash Madoor (28) suffered injuries when a tree fell on him while he was riding his bike on Beeri-Deralakatte Road on Sunday.

Udupi district also saw heavy rains throughout Sunday. All the rivers in the district also witnessed increased water flow.

In Sasthan, more than 10 houses were flooded because of heavy rains. One household lost all the grocery items in the floods while others could shift them on time. But all these houses have been damaged.

Most of these flooded houses belonged to Muslim community. They could not celebrate their Eid feast as they were busy in protecting their houses from further damage.

    Dear Readers, Gods Gift of rain water should be preserved by building dams. This water flows from Ghats through rivers goes to Sea and pushed back to land. But, if you build dams we can preserve water for summer days as well generate electricity. Our politicians have to act on it.

    you are absolutely right. I wonder if some like minded people in S.K. can create a group of people who can canvas for Rain Water Harvesting. Even if every family make a moderate tank during the rain season, there will be so much of water for agriculture and perhaps washing of clothes etc. People need to be made aware. Even planting of trees during rainy season, can bring in the greenery and can hold the top soil from corroding - to help the environment. Everyone must take interest in this so as not to lose the God given resource to Sea.

    This is result when people started building the houses on paddy fields, where no proper water flow. there is nothing called heavy rains so far in thi year only few places it it is rained moderate,we have seen heavy rains when water is crosing highways and people is to live houses for months,

    Cities and villages in Mangaluru, Udupi and other towns should have been ready for the monsoons. There is no need to repent after the damage is done by heavy rains. This happens all the time. I feel sorry for the people who have lost all the belongings due to flooded houses and also streets which didi not have proper drainage. Muslim communities could not celebrate Eid. It is sad.
