Bengaluru: Govt to send 1,000 pourakarmikas to Singapore to study manhole cleaning

Bengaluru, Jun 25 (DHNS): The state government is sending 1,000 pourakarmikas on a study tour to Singapore. Social Welfare Minister H Anjaneya told reporters they would study mechanised cleaning of manholes.

The department has earmarked Rs 10 crore for the purpose. The first group of 70 will leave for Singapore in July. The department will bear the full cost of the tour. Manual cleaning of manholes is banned in India, but many contractors violate the law and get workers to clean them. Three workers who descended into a manhole were choked to death in Bengaluru last month.

The municipal authorities have bought machines to clean manholes in many cities and towns, but pourakarmikas are not properly trained to use them.

That is the reason the government is sending them to Singapore, where the cleaning is completely mechanised, he said.

Workers selected from across districts will also learn safety measures. They will be accompanied by department officials.

    why send them to Singapore?
Instead appoint Singapore returned Experienced worker to train
if you pay them Rs. 15000 per month also 6 month will be 90000 per person and 1000 worker meand 9 crore. still 1 crore will be save, more over that 1000 people also work for that 6 month period.

Utter waste of tax payers money and there should be a middle man who is benefiting from all this. One day will come when the citizens will be sent to a foreign country to study cleanliness. Follow the rules of Singapore to keep city clean.

No use of sending Corporators, Officers, and now so called pourakarkas to abroad or withing India for studies. Eventhough they have been sent to abroad and many places in India what is the outcome actually nil. they go for enjoyment like a picnic. Practically the result is nil. Dont waste tax payers money like this.

Send ministers, MLAS and their kith and kins if they wish. After they return , they have to clean the Manhole of their respective area/constituency. We commoners have no objection.
Height of stupidity. It seems our lawmakers have lost the sense.May be to amass as much as possible as no guarrantee after next election.Applicable to all parties.

Come on seems sort of foolishness. Send 10 smart team leaders to get good training there in Singapore instead of sending 1000.

Then bring all 1000 to Bangalore to train by the team leaders so avoid unnecessary cost and also I don't think you will get a Kannada speaking trainer in Singapore..

Needs to revise this decision seems.

Instead of blowing the taxpayers money better send 2 or 3 responsible experts in this field for latest technical knowhow. Let these trained Municipal employees conduct workshops for others.
Better use brain instead of kidney.

It would be OK to send these pourakarmikas for a leisure or Holiday after all the poor people are also entitled to know about the world & enjoy. It looks like a comedy by putting it as study tour. if the cleanliness is mechanised in Singapore, what do they study in this tour.? handling the equipments? it could be esily taught in India too. with the elections round th corner some gimmiks. seeing the smoke and dust in city day in & day out. these Karmikas would have enjoyed a serene green country like switzerland more.

Travel Bhagya to Karmikas and department officials by draining tax payers money. This kind of move you will find only in India. With this money they can train 10,000 people in India by bringing trainers from Singapore and with the help of training videos.
