Udupi, Jun 23: T S Aboobaker from Kadiyali here, who was popularly known as 'Traffic Sahib', breathed his last at his residence on Friday June 23.
Aboobaker, though not trained as a traffic cop, had taken up the social initiative of helping people, especially students, negotiate the traffic and cross the road safely. He was thus made a traffc warden, and served in this position for decades.

Hailing from Honnale near Brahmavar, Aboobaker was into seat cushion works for vehicles for a living since the last many years at Kadiyali. He was very fond of children. During the period the road between Kadiyali and Kalsanka was very narrow, children of Kadiyali school were facing problems in crossing the road to reach their school. Aboobaker used to stop his work in the morning and again in the evening, to help the children cross the road.
Because of this free service he extended to all the children, the children used to address him as 'Traffic Sahib'. In reconition of this service, several organizations and institutions had felicitated and honoured him. The police department had vested him with special powers to control traffic at Kadiyali Junction. The then home minister, the late Dr V S Acharya, had even presented him with a traffic uniform.
Aboobaker, who was not feeling well since some days, was being treated for his ailments, it is gathered. His health suddenly deteriorated on Thursday night. Arrangements have been made at his residence near Indiranagara school in the town for the people topay their last respects to his mortal remains.
