Udupi, Jun 21: A workshop on Human Rights, Gender Equality and Human trafficking, human and environment protection was organized at V S Acharya auditorium in Rajathadri Manipal here on Tuesday, June 20.
The programme was organized by the Karnataka Human Rights Commission in association with Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department. The workshop was held for panchayat members and other departmental officials. It was supported by Gender concerns India and Academy of Gandhian Studies.
"If any Human Rights violation takes place in the society, people are free to call Human Rights commission, the toll free number is 180042523333. They may also email kshrc2007@gmail.com," said Meera Saxena, chairperson of Karnataka state Human Rights Commission.
Meera Saxena further said, "Child marriage, slave system are still in practice. The public must not stay silent about it. Nobody will face any problem if they file a complaint at the HR commission. Considering the severity of the complaint, the commission will investigate the case. If there is truth in the complaint, the commission will file a case. The complainant name will be kept secret.
"Nearly, 66991 complaints have been received after HR commission formed at the State level in all, of them 58740 have been disposed and 8000 cases are still pending," she said.
"A total of 1131 complaints have been received from the Udupi district, of which 1009 were settled, 122 are still pending. The HR commission has filed 9000 suo motto cases.
"The legal work should be done on priority. Many complaints are very small which can be tackled," Saxena added.
"Most cases in general are related to land, civil, labour and family disputes. Issues at the court, are not discussed here," she added.
"Police personnel must always be in uniform, and should not wear civil dress while catching culprits. They are there to catch thieves," Meera Saxena clarified.
"If anyone misuses the name of Human Right Commission for cheating, threat, illegal activity, the commission will take serious action against them. She instructed the police department to verify the vehicles which use the HR name board. If it is fake, the police should take action against them," she added.
She continuing the interaction and said, "The highest number of complaints are received from Bangaluru and Mysuru because people are more educated and the rate of crime is also more compared to other districts."
"The developing districts have all the facilities but officials do not have the will to extend them to the public. As Government officials are the public servants and paid by the public consolidated fund of India. There is needed to change ones' mindset," she expressed.
Plight of Health Sector
"There is a lack of cleanliness in the hospitals, lack of staff, specialists, machines, shortage facility for free drug supply, the issue of bribes and the threat of illicit removal of internal body parts. These are all issues brought to the notice of Chief secretary of Health and Family welfare department.
She commented on the shortage of doctors in the health sector, yet recruitment not taking place. "It is the responsibility of Superintendent of health officer to manage the situation," she informed
"There is a lack of specialists in many fields including cognitive, and veterinary care. Most specialists move to foreign countries, where they get a high pay. Apart from this, the government should try to attract physicians here by providing staff quarters, a good pay scale and other facilities."
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, Brinda Adige director of Global Concerns, Dinakar Babu, zilla panchayat president, Sheela K Shetty, vice president were present.
