Beltangady, Jun 19: A man tried to immolate his mother after pouring petrol on her. This incident happened on Sunday June 18 at Nettarakody, Koyyur village in the taluk.
In this incident, the woman in question, identified as Radhamma (55), wife of retired engineer of Mangalore Electric Supply Company Ltd, Koosappa Gowda, suffered critical injuries. She stands admitted into a hospital in the son.
Radhamma's son, Harish Gowda, and daughter-in-law, Divyaprabha, allegedly committed this heinous act. The couple had scores to settle against Radhamma relating to a property, it is said.
Radhamma holds 1.6 acres of land in Koyyur village in her name. A suit demanding share in this property filed by her son is pending in the court here. It is gathered that her son and daughter-in-law had been pestering the old couple for vesting a portion of the property with them. It is said that complaints were made to various authorities including district superintendent of police about physical and mental torture to which the parents were subjected to, but nothing was done to help them out of this situation.
On Sunday, a backhoe had been hired to mark the boundaries of the property in question. It is said that Harish and his wife arrived there, pushed Radhamma to the ground, poured petrol on her with a can, and attacked her. As Radhamma' husband and dome others came there running, duly shouting for help, the couple backed out from torching her, and a catastrophe in the making was averted.
A case about this incident was registered in the polcie station here. Investigation has been taken up.
