Udupi, Jun 12: In a shocking incident, a young man assaulted and robbed a 73-year-old woman of her gold and cash. The incident which came to light late, occurred at a lane near Krishna Math here on June 5.
Kaveramma, of Tamil Nadu origin is the victim. She used to pick rags around Krishna Math for her living and sleep near the Math.
A youth assaulted her while she was picking rags on June 5. He snatched her gold ear rings and Rs 30,000 tied around her waist before fleeing. The injured woman was taken by people to a local hospital and admitted to Shankerpura Vishwasada Mane rehabilitation centre. A complaint was registered at Udupi women's police station. Police have continued their search for the youth.
Social activist Vishu Shetty Ambalpady, expressing his anguish and said, "Several requests have been submitted to the district administration requesting to start women's rehabilitation centres and day care centres for weak, injured and helpless elderly women and girls. But the government has not responded yet. No vehicle or basic facilities are provided for women's helpline. Will the youth who do not spare old women, spare young girls? The administration should open rehabilitation centre and day care centres at least after this. Necessary facilities should be provided to women's helpline."
