Mangaluru, Jun 5: Mangaluru city corporation observed the World Environment Day at Townhall here on Monday, June 5.
Speaking on occasion Mayor Kavitha Sanil said,"We have been celebrating Environment Day for the past several years and have always stressed on keeping our surroundings clean and tidy but our efforts are not a 100 percent successful. Today we have taken an oath to segregate dry waste and wet waste and handover it to Anthony Waste Management, whose vehicles will come to collect the waste
"Today we have taken an oath to segregate dry waste and wet waste and handover it to Anthony Waste Management, whose vehicles will come to collect the waste everyday. I advise people to follow the segregating of dry and wet waste. For the purpose of development we had axed down several trees, and now in order to compensate that, we will plant 1,500 saplings in all the 60 wards within the MCC limits," she added.
Prior to the programme Mayor Kavitha Sanil and other dignitaries planted saplings at Nehru Maidan.
Mayor Kavitha Sanil released stickers of Swaccha Mangaluru.
Mangaluru city commissioner Mohammed Nazeer welcomed the gathering.
Insurance policies and health cards were distributed to civic workers on occasion.
MCC chief whip Shashidhar Hegde, MCC joint commissioner Gokuldas Nayak, corporators Sabitha Misquith, Asha D'Silva, Abdul Rauf and others were present on occasion.
