Nippers is a junior activities programme that introduces children aged 7 to 18 to surf lifesaving. It is a fun outdoors activity that develops a child’s confidence, teaches valuable life skills and safety knowledge. Nippers is a great way for children to make friends, be active and enjoy the beach in a safe environment.
Surf Life Saving and Beach Lifeguarding training exercise have been carried out by Partha Varanashi, Niroop GR and team in the past at Karwar, Murudeshwar, Malpe, Mangaluru and schools located near Kodi Bengre.
Surf Life Saving or nippers is about learning new skills, gaining confidence and having fun in a safe beach environment. For nippers, the beach is the classroom. They gain confidence by passing the 'tests' of swimming, board paddling, beach sprinting, duck-diving on to an incoming wave, spotting a rip, having fun with new friends and discovering things about themselves.
The skills gained at SLS or Nippers will stick to the soul like sand from the beach and be carried for life. The youth of today are the future of Surf Life Saving.
Most surf life-saving clubs offer a Nippers programme, even though the size and style of the activity may vary from club to club. The Nippers pathway teaches lessons and skills which allow young people to continue in lifesaving and sport as they grow older. But it’s not all hard work, one may call it 'serious fun'.
