Udupi, May 19: A person who was taking gold ornaments he had stolen from a house in Katapadi - Kote village about a year and half back for selling them,  was arrested by the police. The incident happened on Wednesday May 17 at Muloor near Kaup.

Vaman Poojary (35), a native of Khandiga in Katapadi-Kote village was the arrested accused. The police have confiscated from him gold ornaments weighing 132 grams valued at Rs 3.54 lac.

Kaup  station sub-inspector (crime), Laxman B was on patrol duty at Muloor on Wednesday night along with some other staff  when the police party found that a person who saw them near Muloor branch of Corporation Bank started to flee. They grew suspicious about him, chased him and took him into custody. When he was subjected to investigation, the theft came to light.

The police, who found a few ornaments packed and kept inside Poojary's shirt pocket, were told during Poojary's questioning that they were the ones stolen from the house of Geetha from Kote about 18 months back. The arrested accused told the police that he had pledged the ornaments in the local cooperative agricultural bank and raised loan after stealing them. On Wednesday, he had released the ornaments from the bank and was planning to sell them at Mangaluru, he told the police.

The operation was conducted by Kaup police sub-inspector, (crime), Laxman B, under the guidance of Kaup police sub-inspector, Jagadish Reddy, and under the directions of police circle inspector of Kaup, Halamurthy Rao. The arrested accused was produced in the court whereupon the court remanded him to judicial custody till May 30.
