Mangaluru, May 16: Sadananda (32), son of Padmanabha, resident of Bollana in Aryapu village, Puttur tlauk, died after lightning struck him when he was fast asleep on the night of Sunday May 14. He was sleeping inside his room after dinner, and was killed by a lightning which struck at around 12.30 am.
When lightning struck, Sadananda let out loud wails from inside the room. Even after family members called him out and knocked at the room door repeatedly, he did not respond. On Monday morning, the family members broke open the bolt of the door and found that Sadananda had breathed his last in his sleep. The postmortem of his body was performed in the government hospital here and the body was handed over to the family. On the basis of a complaint filed by father of the victim Padmanabha, a case was registered in the rural police station here.
A cow inside a cattle shed in Gullady within Belur village in Kundapur tauk died due to lightning on Monday May 15 morning. The lightning which struck the rear wall of the RCC house belonging to Narayana Hegde then created fissure in the wall, entered the cattle shed and killed a milching jersey cow. The lightning also damaged walls, bathroom, electronic equipment, wiring etc as well as the foundation of the house. Total loss has been estimated at over three lac. In addition, the loss due to cow's death has been put at Rs 48,000.
Vijeta (27), living in Dashami Apartment in the town, who was cooking in the kitchen on Monday morning, was struck by lightning. Due to lightning, her ear suffered serious injury. The LPG cylinder inside the kitchen started leaking, but the issue was immediately addressed. The injured woman stands hospitalized.
