Mangaluru, May 16: Groundbreaking ceremony for development works of Bairady pond at an estimated cost of Rs 3.30 crore was held at Padil here on Tuesday May 16.
Addressing the gathering MLA of Mangaluru South J R Lobo said, "It was neccessary for us to take concrete steps to upgrade the Bairady pond here at Padil. Two years ago the local members took up initiative to clean the pond. Later I approached the minor irrigation department and the MUDA chairman to get the work done and extend full support to the upgrading of the pond. So far MUDA and the minor irrigation department have sanctioned 2.5 crore and Rs 79 lac respectively for the purpose of this work. I thank the officials and the MUDA chairman for their full-fledged support.
"Tender will be invited and once the process is over, work will commence. As per the plan, boating facility, jogging track and swimming pool will be constructed here. After the completion of the work, the surrounding area will be developed. Now it is up to the locals to maintain the pond keep it clean and tidy. Legal action will be taken against those who let out effluents and waste into the ponds and lakes," he said.
He also said that eight other ponds in the city and outskirts would be developed on similar lines.
Deputy mayor Rajneesh Kapikad, MUDA chairman Suresh Ballal, MUDA commissioner Srikanth and others were present.
