Mangaluru, May 13: A married woman committed suicide at the railway crossing at Indiranagar in Haleangady in the taluk on Friday May 12 by jumping in front of a moving train. She has been identified as Yashwanti (35), wife of Dhananjay Shettigar, resident of Vidyanagar in Kulai.
Eyewitnesses said that Yashwanti got down from a private bus commuting between the city and Kinnigoli at Indiranagar bus stand. She then suddenly jumped in front of a train that was on the move, and was instantly killed, they added. Although locals wanted to rescue the lady, they could not do anything as everything happened in a flash.
As the body of of the woman was torn asunder in the accident, her identity was established on the basis of a photo of her children wearing uniform. On the basis of the uniform, the school was contacted, through which the parents of the children were identified, it is learnt. The lady had also kept the 'Mangala Sutra' chain worn around the neck inside her purse.
In a death note she left behind at her husband's home at Kulai, she said she was alone responsible for her suicide and no one else was to blame for her death. She said that she was frustrated with health problems which prompted her to take a decision to die. Her husband handed over the death note to the police. He said in a statement that his wife was suffering from nagging backache since long. The police suspect that this might be the reason for the lady getting fed up with her life.
A case of suicide was registered in Mulky police station. Investigation is continuing. Postmortem was conducted at the primary health centre, Karnad, Mulky.
