Mumbai, May 13 (Mumbai Mirror): Untimely rain accompanied by strong winds, thunder and lightning reported in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai sent rail schedules into a tizzy on Central and Harbour lines after overhead power lines snapped on Friday.
Over 100 train services were delayed by 10 to 15 minutes while 30 trains were cancelled, leading to overcrowding at Dadar, Ghatkopar and CST, among others.
As many as 10 long distance trains were also delayed by 10 to 30 minutes.
Central Railway officials said the overhead power lines snapped due to inclement weather, disrupting the suburban services on the Up and Down Harbour Line –between Sanpada and Mankhurd, Matunga and Kurla stations on the Down slow line towards Kalyan, and between Vidyavihar and Kanjurmarg Down fast line towards Kalyan, from 7.40 pm onwards.
“Traffic on Up Harbour line towards CST was restored at 8.09 pm, Down Harbour (towards Panvel) was restored at 8.14 pm. Similarly, traffic was restored on Down slow line towards Kalyan at 8.21pm and Down fast line towards Kalyan at 8.32 pm,” said AK Jain , Senior Public Relations Officer of Central Railway.
A Tata Power spokesperson said, “At 5:32 pm, power tripped at the Chembur station leading to a shutdown at three compact substations. We immediately restored the supply at all the sub-stations by 17:35 hours after isolating the faulty section.”
He added that there was no fault reported at Tata Power in relation to the power outage at Ghatkopar station.
Earlier during the day, four trains were cancelled and 45 services were delayed after a rail fracture was reported near Chembur station on the Harbour line around 9.30 am during morning peak hours.
Though railway officials claimed that traffic was restored at 10.03 am, passengers said Harbour line trains continued to run 10 to 15 minutes even later, till the afternoon.
