Maharashtra to release 2.5 tmcft water from Koyna to Karnataka

Bengaluru, May 10: Maharashtra government has agreed to release 2.5 tmcft of water to Karnataka from the Koyna dam to mitigate the severe drinking water need of the State.

Karnataka’s Water Resources Minister M B Patil informed reporters in Bengaluru about the Maharashtra government’s decision on Wednesday.

It may be recalled that Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had earlier appealed the Union Minister Ananth Kumar to prevail upon the Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Phadnavis on the issue.

``Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Phadnis has agreed to release water from Koyna reservoir following an appeal made by the Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers Ananth Kumar" he said.

Patil said the Krishna water would be released to Karnataka from Koyna reservoir shortly following assurance from the Maharashtra Chief Minister, to the Union Minister Ananth Kumar.
