Mangaluru, May 9: In the early hours of Monday May 8, the entire Dakshina Kannada district experienced good rainfall coupled with thunder and lightning. While rain drenched the parched land and cooled the temperature, lightning left behind a trail of losses.

Rain was reported from Sullia, Guthigar, Kotekar, city and many other places.

After lightning struck a coconut tree at Basrithayabail in Ullal Someshwara, a tree was burnt down. Several family members who were asleep in the adjacent house experienced electric shocks. One of them, Sharat, suffered minor injuries. Electric and electronic goods in the house were substantially damaged and over eight coconut trees standing nearby were partially damaged.

Water which overflowed from national highway 66 near Uchila Sankolige flowed into the house of the late Karunakar Uchila, a well-known freedom fighter. As a result, the compound wall of the house collapsed. Water gushed into the compounds of several houses near the national highway. Highway department officials went through areas affected by the water flowing in from the highway on Monday.

Zilla panchayat member, Dhalakshmi Gatti, taluk panchayat member, Ravishankar Someshwar, and gram panchayat president, Rajesh Uchila, were among those who visited the affected areas.
