Mangaluru, May 7: In a commendable effort, the authorities of a New Mangalore Port (NMP) here rescued a crew member of a ship who suffered a stroke and rushed him to hospital, thus saving his life.
At around 8 pm on Saturday May 6, NMP authorities received an email that read 'DISTRESS MESSAGE / MEDICAL ASSISTANCE REQUIRE' from master of MT Flagship Orchid which was enroute to Sikka and coming from Singapore.
According to the master of the ship, there was a medical emergency for a Ukrainian crew member Sergiy Nalyvayko, aged 40 years, who suffered a stroke and could not use the left part of his body. The master also informed that the ship would reach New Mangalore Port limit after midnight.
New Mangalore Port authorities promptly responded to the distress call and arranged Port tug for medical evacuation. The patient was successfully evacuated using Port tug at 12.35 am Sunday May 7 and admitted to AJ Hospital, Mangaluru through their steamer agent Atlantic Shipping Pvt Ltd. The patient is under observation, and his condition is presently stable.
