Mangaluru May 6: City police commissioner M Chandra Shekar along with other police officers inspected central railway station to check the status of prepaid auto rickshaw booth here on Saturday, May 5. In the recent past the police commissioner had received myriad of complaints against auto drivers.

Addressing media persons, the police commissioner said, “During the phone-in programme, we are receiving frequent complaints against prepaid auto rickshaws. But some auto drivers charge excessive amount to the passengers, even after prepaid auto rickshaw counter started functioning,”

“RTO has given this prepaid counter on a contract basis and at the same time it needs to function smoothly without troubling the passengers. It would be easy for the passengers if the auto fares are displayed on the counter to avoid further confusion. If we find any auto drivers charging more than actual fares, then we will take stringent action against the drivers under MV act and make sure their license will be cancelled.” he added.

DCP Sanjeev Patil, RTO GS Hegde and others were present.

The list looks good and hope we also have one prepaid auto booth at the other exit at the Mangalore Central and also at Mangalore Junction. The City police should also have a restriction of the number of auto's parked at a time at the Auto Stand. Sometimes the autos are parked all over the railway station and reaches till the junction near the temple which is located between Wenlock and the railway station. But when the prepaid booth is functional the number of auto's may reduce since the auto drivers will not be able to hoodwink innocent visitors and passengers. Does this booth have a different rate for night trips by auto. That is not displayed or what is extra for night trips or early morning trips. Visitors and passengers should take care from the deceitful auto drivers.

Am I the only one who can see that all auto rickshaw drivers and also some taxi drivers have absolutely no regard for the one way lane in front of the central railway station?

Just to save a few hundred metres these morons cause traffic jams in the area without realising that their ignorance is actually costing them more in terms of both time and fuel.

Commissioner should also check the ownership of these autos. Majority of them are owned by the railway police force or in the names of their relatives. A big mafia is on at the railways.
