Mangaluru, May 4: Senior citizens will have additional two seats reserved for them in the local city buses from Friday May 5, informed deputy commissioner Dr K G Jagadeesh during a meeting of the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) held at the RTO here on Thursday May 4.

Addressing the meeting, the deputy commissioner said that the decision was taken on the basis of a request from bus commuters' association.

"It is a serious issue. Aged people have been finding it difficult to get comfortable seats in buses. Nowadays, senior citizens are travelling by buses in large numbers. Already, they have two reserved seats, now they will get additional two seats in both private and KSRTC buses running in Mangaluru RTO limits," he said.

Nagarika Hita Rakshane Vedike members pointed out the issue of bus bay near St Aloysius College, complaining that buses were not entering this bus bay and collecting passengers from the roadside instead. "This leads to traffic jam in the area," they said. The DC in response warned the bus owners' association members that if buses do not enter the bay, they would be seized by the police and the RTO.

The DC also directed the KSRTC and the private bus owners to extend two buses each on Mangaluru-Mudipu route up to Konaje University campus.

Various complaints were raised in the meeting about auto drivers charging exorbitantly in the city, and non-issual of tickets in buses. The DC ordered the RTO to take swift action against auto drivers and bus conductors who are found guilty of violating the laws.

The RTO requested all bus owners to change the name 'Jyothi circle' to 'Dr Ambedker circle' in route display boards.

Superintendent of police Bhushan G Borase, DCP Sanjeeva Patil, RTO G S Hegde and others were present.

In the RTA meeting yesterday the DC ordered that Buses (Express/City/Service) should only STOP at the stops to Drop and Pick up Passengers and NOT WAIT (for minuites until the next Competitor appears)....This extra WAIT forces them to drive recklessly to the next stop to maintain his Time slot.

The action of asking Lorries/Busses to drive in the lane away from the Median should be enforced strictly. This will speed up Traffic movement.

Buses Should enter the Bays earmarked.

Why can't plain clothed Policemen be positioned to observe if the Rules/Laws are strictly followed by both Pvt/Public Transporters and Drivers of Two and Four wheelers ?

We as Citizens also should also obey the Rules of Safe driving.

Indicators are rarely used....Horns are blared for no rhyme or reason....Pedestrian crossings ignored endangering Pedestrians who want to cross.(noticed especially at major Signals right under the nose of a Traffic Cop !!)..Two wheelers have no side view mirrors (All removed ).

When will Mangaluru become Smart !!!

Here are the list of some of the problems to be addressed and controlled by authorities:-

    1.Shrill horns
    2.Over speed and racing
    3.Continuous whistling ( most important )
4.Conductor standing on the foot board / entrance ( most important)
5.Not giving enough time for passenger to get in and get out - shouting "Bega Bega"
6.Rude behavior of conductors with passengers.
7.Conductors leaning for support on the passengers.
8.Buses stopping away for designated bus stops.

Put more buses and keep strictly limited standing seats eg. Ten or Fifteenth. All competitions between buses and Dadagiri by Bus owners Mafia will stop. There will be a discipline. Make bus bay where ever there is a place by removing (or relocating) old trees and planting new trees in some other areas to compensate. Educate passengers by videos on long routs like Mangalore-Udupi/ Manipal/ Kundapur routs about religious harmony and Swachch Bharath. All Government buses should have nice proverbs on them to educate the people. Eg Respecting old people. Start preparing blue print for smart metro for our Smart Mangalore. Jai hind.

It is a joke. The officer should personally check if these buses are compatible or not, It is nearly impossible for senior citizens to board the private buses as the first step itself is too high. My parents who are 90 and 80 loved to go by bus, have completely stopped because of this and the callousness of the drivers. My father has had a fall also as the driver moved the vehicle before he could alight from it properly. Also they abuse senior citizens if they cause a delay while boarding or alighting the vehicle. The entire public transport system buses, autos also should have their drivers go thru a rigorous aptitude program before they are allowed in public service.
Most important are the so called buses themselves compatible for public transport as they are mostly seater bodies built on Lorry Chassis. The new ksrtc buses are proof enough why people prefer them to private buses.

What is the fun in providing 2 additional seats for senior citizens. ? Eventhough full bus seats are provided no use. The senior citizens have to face the brunt. Better issue strict instructions to the Bus conductor to vacate seats if youngsters (both girls and boys) occupy senior citizens seats. This is the best solution.

Giving seats to senior citizens in city buses is a very good idea. It works well in Mumbai. The moment a senior citizen arrives, requests the youngster vacates. But I had a very bitter experience in Mangalore. Only youngsters occupy these seats and blatantly refuse to vacate the seat even after requesting. I agree with the readers that the conductor should use his authority to see that the seniors should sit comfortably. Also authorities should ensure that the rule is enforced and not appear only in papers.

There is a separate queue for physically challenged, senior citizens and pregnant women in almost all government facilities in the United States. In private sector, whenever queue is needed, they follow the same rules. There is no such thing as reserved seats for female. Mangalore should follow the same rules.

    Great Move!!

It will be good if private buses provide concession to senior citizen of 25% like how BMTC buses provide in Bangalore.

Abolish the private bus operators from the city of Mangalore and we shall see the difference. The most corrupt Govt. department RTO should be stringent towards the private buses. The private bus drivers do not know were to stop the buses properly, if the RTO monitors the Milagres cross
bus stop the express and private buses do not know were to stop the buses all the drivers are in a racing mood. They reach Catholic club and even ask passengers to get down there. The city bus conductors do not issue tickets to the commuters. The most disgraceful city bus system.

    Perfect comment by Dylan, Mangalore.
Throw the private operators out. Introduce more and more government owned buses.
There will be improvement in all aspects of traffic problems, discipline and will prevent many accidents and innocent lives at large.
