Cleanest cities in India - Mysuru slips to 5th place, Mangaluru a distant 63

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 4: The result of the 'Swacch Sarvekshan' survey conducted on the basis of cleanliness criteria was announced by union minister for urban development, M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday May 4.

As per the list, Mysuru, which had topped the chart last year, is ranked at No 5. Indore has been ranked on top of the list, followed by Bhopal, Visakhapatnam, Surat and Mysuru which have been ranked from No 2 to 5 in that order.

Mangaluru, which was ranked third in a different list of cleanest cities in India under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan back in 2015, has been ranked a distant 63. It did not find a place in the 73 cities ranked in the Swacch Sarvekshan list last year either. Udupi ranks 143, and Bengaluru 210.

Gonda in Uttar Pradesh has got the dubious distinction of being the dirtiest city of India. New Delhi Municipal Council is placed at seventh place. Performance of cities in West Bengal have not been considered as the Mamata Banerjee-led government has not taken part in this survey.

10 lowest ranking cities (in order)

45 percent of marks this time were given for open defecation free, solid waste management, education, and capacity building. 25 percent marks were earmarked for field inspection and the balance 30 percent for citizen feedback.

Jharkhand and Chattisgarh states have performed well this time as per the survey whereas UP and Bihar have fared poorly. In UP, Varanasi is the only city to have got a honourable spot, having been ranked at No 32.

The ministry of urban development (MoUD) started the 'Swachh Survekshan' survey, ranking of cities on cleanliness and other aspects of urban sanitation in 2016, in which it ranked 73 cities across the country. On the same lines, MoUD initiated 'Swachh Survekshan' 2017 which conducted a survey to rank nearly 500 cities of India.

These surveys should aspire us positively. Lets all make an effort to get back into the top 10. It will only be possible to do so with the contribution of all the citizens of Mangalore.
I was in Mangalore recently and the places I travelled had improved in terms of cleanliness , may be there are other places that need to improve as well. Lets work towards it .

Actually surprised Mangalore is at 63. If you walk around Hampankatta, there's garbage everywhere. I wonder how disgusting other cities could be, the ones that come below Mangalore.

Really cannot understand the central market area total mess, the Mayor visited once and what about the shops using the footpath to stack their merchandise. Even the under ground cables no one knows if they are set, in some places the inter lock blocks are not put back and still on the footpaths. When will the mess be cleared ? any idea Sir ji !!!

I live near urwa market and I feel urwa and the surrounding areas like mannagudda etc. are the cleanest in Mangalore, u can always find these sweepers cleaning almost everyday and the drains carry rain water efficiently. Recently a new apartment opened behind my building and now I see that the residents of this building just keep their garbage outside and the dogs rip off the plastic bags leaving garbage all over the place and these poor sweepers have to do the dirty job of cleaning everything.

If Mangalore is not clean today then it is because of the mindset of these people who live in apartments that costs more than 50 lakh rupees but little do they care about the surrounding areas. The MCC should put hefty fines on these apartment owners and also take up the responsibility of educating the people about segregating dry & wet waste dumping it in a proper manner...

It’s quite natural, they give priority to BJP ruled states, undermine congress ruled developed status. (They are the surveyor, approver, publisher; it is all under one roof). Because they have the power now.
