Bengaluru: Ambulance stuck in traffic held up for CM's convoy, probe ordered

Bengaluru, May 4 (DHNS): Stopping an ambulance to clear the path for Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's convoy has infuriated the public with many terming it “VIP culture.”

The incident happened when the chief minister was on his way to Ravindra Kalakshetra to attend ‘Bhageeratha Jayanti” organised by the Kannada and Culture department. As the convoy reached Town Hall, police stopped the traffic on JC Road. Among the vehicles stuck in the snarl was an ambulance. The siren and flash-lights of the ambulance were on, indicating that the driver was in a hurry to take a patient to a hospital.

However, traffic police did not allow the ambulance to move even as they made way for the chief minister's convoy.

“There were numerous cars of supporters that followed the chief minister's vehicle. It took nearly 10 minutes for the whole convoy to pass. The ambulance was stuck in the same spot during this time," an eyewitness said. He said other commuters urged the police to make an exception for the ambulance. “But, police only shouted at them back. Once the road was opened for public, there was a huge rush and the ambulance took five minutes to cross Hudson Circle," he added.

Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he did not know that an ambulance was stuck in traffic. “If we had known, we would have allowed it to pass by,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, City Police Commissioner Praveen Sood has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

“Stoppage of any emergency vehicles especially ambulances is not allowed for any reasons. I have sought details about the incident, and necessary action will be taken if there is any lapse on the part of the police officials concerned,” Sood told reporters.

This probe is a joke and mockery of people. I have personally experienced of how ranking police officers tasked with VIP security get private vehicles off road on airport road when VIPs visit Mangalore. I have also experienced how arrogantly they behave with the common people in the garb of VIP security. In few days, people forget their bitter experience, but the culture remains intact. VIP culture cannot be done away by nonsensical play to the gallery kind of measures like red beacon. Let first the parliament bring a law to withdraw 'privileges' of MLA/MP/MLC and then talk about culture.

Folks, do you all remember the incident at Nanthoor Circle. MLA had confrontation with Traffic Police for stopping MLA, to give way for Ambulance.

When British were ruling India there were only a hundred Kings. But after chasing them away and after getting Independence now there are thousands of Kings are ruling India. Every Minister, MLA and MLC acts like King and Queen. Many are Criminal Kings too.

This story should tell everything about the behaviour of Elected Crooks.

Joe you are 100 percent right. Also the Kings and queens have followers, who are usually blind and illogical when it comes their own King's/Queen's comfort and privilege.

Actually our cm or any other vip should travel like any other citizens in traffic, without blocking any vehicle movement. Learn to wait at traffic signals. Then only our India can shine and will be different from other countries.

This issue is highlighted because of the convoy. Real shame on police.

Actual problem is with Bangalore as a whole. Ive seen myself vehicles overtaking an ambulance during emergency and also blocking the ambulance.
Honestly, there should be some kind of law for the Rights and priority on the road.

Its police department to take care of everythings hence they have to educate their staff that which is important and which is not.

On duty police personals should have the comon sense that Ambulance is for sick people, however they should check it for safety reasons and let go.

Ambulances may be used to eliminate the VIP people also. or ambulances can be used to defame ministers also. Sure investigation is required.

When a VIP gets stuck in an ambulance for the passage of a VVIP , they will understand the problems faced by general public.
Shame on the VIPs. After all who made them VIPs and they should also remember that their VIP tenure can be terminated by the public at any time (maximum 5 years).
