Bengaluru: Govt to send 1,000 civic workers to Singapore for training in sanitation

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Apr 27: It is a dream-come-true situation for one thousand civic workers of Karnataka. The state government has drawn up a plan to send them to Singapore in phases to enable them to see for themselves personally and study the way solid waste is managed, and technology and practices involved with the disposal of waste there.

The directorate of municipal administration here has got itself busy with the task of procuring passports of the civic workers in stages for this purpose. For the civic workers who would have so far only dreamt of air travel will be realizing their dreams soon. The trip, being arranged by the directorate of municipal administration under Special Component Plan for Scheduled Castes and Tribal Sub Plan for Scheduled Tribes guidelines, envisages sending permanent civic workers of city corporations, municipal councils, town municipalities, town panchayats etc. This trip is believed to help in implementing the sanitation practices being implemented at Singapore here.

Six each from ten city corporations in the sta te, four each from 57 municipal councils, three each from 117 town municipalities and one to two from each of the 91 town panchayats will travel to Singapore along with 40 officials for study tour. The trip will be conducted in stages at the rate of two officials for every group of 50 civic workers, it is gathered.

The selection process is normally completed on the basis of age, length of service, and medical fitness. The civic workers, it is learnt, are happy and eager to undertake this trip which they believe will be a lifetime experience that will help them to hone their skills and learn new things.

M R Venkatesh, chairman of Karnataka State Safai Karmachari Commission, says that the civic workers are being sent on study tour to a foreign country to create added awareness about cleanliness, hygiene and training in new methods.

It is better to invite few workers from Singapore to teach how to clean. Or appointment civic preson from Singapore to do the cleaning work in karnataka.so that time our workers will learn.

Please respect the initiative taken by the CM. The people who go and come will be questioned by the locals every now and then. They are not going for holiday. Lets highlight that they are going to get training by seeing the city and the process maintained to clean the city.
The people who go for this will not be spared from questions from media and locals.

Wow..so generous, just beucse it is from state govt?
2 years back the entire ministry went to south America to STUDY flora fauna or whatever.. anyone went and questioned them what was the end result? whose money was it?

Such hpocracy that the same people make fun of Modi's trip even though it is mandatory as the head of the country and it is not a jolly trip as he does not even eat there at times.

Given the past track record of such (useless) tours at the expense of tax payers of India, it would be wise to hire expert from different countries for a period of at least 5 years, so that they can help not only on issues of sanitation, but also eliminating corruption, that leads to good governance and well being of our country.

It is shame on the part of India to send Indians to tiny countries on such trivial issues, while we talk of smart cities, Achhe Din etc.!!

    Jai Hind!!

Reading so many valuable comments from people of so many backgrounds always makes an interesting reading for us when we glimpse in so many web sites, newspapers and magazines. India's growing population is certainly gaining so much of knowledge on so many topics that relate to the daily business all over India, particularly Mangalore and our State of Karnataka. Our readers certainly are free to make whatever comments they feel suitable - after all it is the freedom of press and freedom of expression that we enjoy in India which is the best trump card for all citizens, young or old - men or women.

Sending 1000 Civic leaders to Singapore for getting familiarized with the sanitation systems adapted in Singapore is a marvelous idea indeed. It costs money, it costs time for expertise to travel abroad, and it costs leadership to evaluate what is needed for our State and for our country. Let us select the right people to go abroad and learn the methods and practices used by others in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation, especially Singapore which is known to be one of the world's best kept disciplined City where they sacrifice so much of time, money and human resources to maintain the discipline and order.

Let us allocate some of our resources for sending our best people abroad and get trained. Once they bring their knowledge back home, that knowledge can be transferred to other parts of India for purpose of creating better sanitation and better health and hygiene. Somebody has to be the lucky one to go abroad at the tax payer's cost. Somebody has to return home with a bag of knowledge and share with others. Somebody has to be the leader and decision maker while somebody else has to learn the hard way abroad and bring back the best of substance.

Let us therefore open our hearts and be positive and supportive of other's selection to go abroad and bring back the knowledge that we all rich deserve to share and be shared.

Now a days if you buy processing equipment from international market , their technical team will install and give the training to the operators / stake holders without sending anybody to their factories to see how the system works . The decision to send 1000 workers looks just a waste of tax payers money i guess .

Sending civic workers to Singapore for training in sanitation (those personnel who are actually performing the work day-in and day-out), is definitely a sensible move, rather than sending politicians on a "study tour" (whose contribution after returning from a foreign trip, would have been worthless or almost "NIL").

Hope such initiatives involving considerable expenditure to the exchequer, would result in considerable gains to the society at large.

Not sure how productive it will be. But it would be wiser if expertise, personnel and technology from Singapore comes here and start working on this field along with our civic workers which will give them hand-on experience, then on take over from there onwards.

Waste of public money. You don't need to go to Singapore to learn cleanliness or sanitation. If taught here they can easily learn. Another gimmick to waste money and gain money for someone's pocket.
