Mangaluru, Apr 26: In what may come as a relief for citizens who are facing problems due to water rationing by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) for the past month, mayor Kavita Sanil on Wednesday announced that there would be no restriction in water supply henceforth.
Addressing a press meet at MCC here, the mayor said, "We are happy to inform the residents of Mangaluru city that there will be continuous water supply daily from today (April 26). There will be no restriction and water will be supplied to all residents under MCC.
"At the start of my tenure (last month), I directed the officials to supply water for 48 hours a week with a break of 24 hours in between. Later, the break was rescheduled to 36 hours. Then we rationed the water 4 days a week. We have now succeeded in saving water in dams as expected. So now there is no hurdle to supplying continuous water till the end of May. I am thankful to all the residents who cooperated with us during the water rationing," she said.
"Now we have 4.22 metres of water stored in Thumbay dam and 4.49 metres in AMR dam. The quantity of water which is stored in these dams is enough to meet the needs of the citizens till the end of May. We hope to get sufficient rainfall in June. This is a time of rejoice, as we have achieved our goal," she added.
Outstanding bills
Kavita Sanil further said, "There is huge amount of pending water bills of various industries and factories which are situated in various parts of the corporation limits. Rs 52,47,943 is pending from Surathkal region, from wards 1 to 11. Rs 76,56,705 is pending from Mulky region, Rs 5,05,000 from Chelar and Rs 1,80,000 from Ballal region. These are the authorized connections, but besides these, there are many industries using water through illegal connections. We have already given enough time to pay the bills. MCC has started the survey to locate illegal connections and take action. I request everyone to pay the pending bills as soon as possible.
"At the same time, in a happy news, this year 95% of the residents paid their property taxes to the corporation," she added.
"Mangaluru is turning into a clean city. We have already removed all flex boards and banners which were placed in various parts of the city. We have formed a team which is daily engaged in evacuating footpath vendors," she said.
Deputy mayor Rajaneesh and former mayor Harinath were present.
