Mangaluru, Apr 26: MLA, J R Lobo, instructed Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) to implement an action plan of serving notices to people releasing effluents of houses and buildings within the city into the drains. He was speaking after inaugurating World Malaria Day programme on Tuesday April 25.
He pointed out that if the city corporation fails to regulate dirty water from flowing in its drains, it will fail in its goal of eradicating Malaria and Filariasis from its limits. "Our efforts should be aimed at ensuring that only clean water flows in our storm drains. People discharging dirty water into drains should be acted against. All the effluents should reach only the underground drainage system," he insisted.
Lobo noted that with the support of medical practitioners, who have joined hands with the city corporation in its aim to drive away Malaria from the city, the incidence of this disease has significantly come down although total eradication has remained a mirage. He asked the citizens also to support the initiatives of the city corporation in this direction. He advised people to keep abreast of the awareness programme being undertaken to eradicate Malaria.
City mayor, Kavita Sanil, said that mainly an effort is being made to stop mosquitoes from getting bred at construction sites. She asked owners of all the houses, lodges, hotels and the buildings to clean their tanks before the onset of monsoon. She said staff of Malaria control unit will be releasing Guppy fishes into over 11,000 open wells within the city corporation jurisdiction in May. She said that there is a plan to publicize Malaria control measures through garbage collection vehicles which do house to house visits. On this occasion, wallpaper on Malaria awareness was released.
Deputy mayor, Rajaneesh, chairperson of health standing committee, Nagaveni, and city corporation commisisioner, Muhammed Nazeer, were present.
