Udupi, Apr 25: In a tragic incident, a woman and her child drowned in a stone quarry pond at Perupade in Padu Alevoor here on Tuesday April 25.

The deceased have been identified as Neelamma (30) and Hanumanthappa (5).

It is said that Neelamma had come to the quarry pond on Tuesday along with her son to wash clothes.

Hanumanthappa who was playing near the pond accidentally fell into the water, and a terrified Neelamma jumped in, in a bid to rescue her son. Both of them were pulled in by the water.

Wife of Yamunappa, Neelamma and her family are natives of Aihole, engaged in coolie work in Udupi.

Expert swimmers and locals started a search operation to locate the mother and child. Fire service also rushed to the spot.

The locals expressed ire against the fire personnel for using a boat with no expert swimmer on board, and more so, for not getting into the water themselves to search for the missing duo. Finally, locals Ashok, Nitesh and Munna dived in to rescue the mother and child, and managed to bring their bodies ashore.

Manipal police have registered a case.
